Arlington police investigate vehicle break-ins at Pentagon City Mall

Virginia WJLA - Whitney Wild - Wed, 01 Aug 2012 19:29:48 EST

Arlington police are investigating nearly a dozen vehicle break-ins and damage reports at Pentagon City Mall. Two of the vehicles broken into were unmarked police cars.

"I think it’s terrible. You gotta pay for parking and then your car's not safe," said Alexandria resident Sameul Mayle.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, four floors at the mall parking garage became crime scenes.

Suitland resident Clifton Noel added, "People work hard for what they have. It's wrong. If you want something, I think you should work hard and buy it yourself."

In Broad daylight, the suspects broke into five cars and damage five others. They took with them valuables and other personal items.

Two unmarked law enforcement vehicle were robbed of handcuffs and ammunition.

Police say the thieves got into the cars by punching out the doorside locks.

"They had a tool. Obviously, they had knowledge of how to get into these vehicles. Many of the cars were older models, which are more susceptible to break ins," explained Dustin Sternbeck with the Arlington County Police Department.

Lately, Arlington parking lots have been a haven for crime.

Last month, a woman was sexually assaulted in a Ballston parking lot, but police insist there's no trend.

No extra patrols are being added to the area at this time.

Police urge shoppers to be savvy, making sure their cars are locked and valuables are hidden.

In a written statement, the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City said they are working closely with the Arlington County Police and referred any questions to the department.
